About Me
My name is Elly Meteer and I am a senior at Grosse Pointe North High School. I am currently serving as North Pointe's Editor-in-Chief, following my previous two years of being the Life Section Editor and Staff Reporter.
Initially, I joined this class to pursue my passion in writing, which would grow into my love for journalism as a whole; which consisted of connections, investigating, mentoring, and expanding insight on the world around me.
Outside of our production room, I take part in multiple other activities within my school such as Peer-2-Peer, KNOTS, National Honors Society, and S.A.V.E. Club while also taking on a barista position at a smoothie shop.
Testimonial
North Pointe has taught me so much when it comes to mentoring, writing, and leadership over my past three years of participating as once an Intern, Staff Reporter, Section Editor, and now Editor-in-Chief. I have discovered community and connections that ultimately metamorphosed my interest in writing into a passion of leadership and strategizing. Journalism has provided me real-life experiences where I have genuinely learned, whether it is collaborating with classmates, faculty or community members, writing, even building bonds in a “serious” environment. I do not think it is just for writers as it teaches you so much more than how to write a proper article. It is a process of teamwork and responsibility, something I feel has truly grown within me.
Taking up the unforeseen difficulties in this class was challenging for me, at least at first. The publication involves a lot of work, and each issue's planning, organizing, interviewing, curating, designing, verifying, and finishing processes will differ from the previous one. There are always fresh challenges to face, circumstances to work through, and issues to resolve. I have high expectations for the paper and want to finish and improve everything I start. Despite the responsibilities, however, for me, it's a different kind of "pressure." I embrace the constant movement, and I can appreciate the strain put on me, from the moment of plotting a story to the endless hours of production nights - picking apart every flaw on a page minutes before it being sent to the printer. Each issue gives me a sense of pride. There is not a time I do not feel proud of myself, my Editorial Board, Staff Reporters, and Interns.
I'm an introverted person by nature. I have always enjoyed working for myself and being independent, and my only motivation for joining North Pointe was my passion for writing. It forced me to step outside of my comfort zone almost quickly because it involves only teamwork, continual communication requirements, and conducting interviews with a variety of sources. I was so apprehensive when calling almost every gas station in Grosse Pointe, St. Claire Shores, and Detroit to acquire at least one quote from a gas station employee when I had to write a report about the increase in gas station rates for one of my first stories. Despite my crippling fear, I rode up to a nearby vehicle dealership and asked a few inquiries of an autoworker. When it comes to finishing tasks and guiding my peers, I've learned to put my personal fears, tension, and worry aside. I now have more confidence in my ability to work, communicate, and interact with others. It feels simple due to my journalism 'expertise', and it never felt that way for me prior to joining North Pointe.
Even while carrying out reads, attending editorial board meetings, editing pages, and instructing are all part of the technical responsibilities of being Editor-in-Chief, I have always felt secure in my relationships with my peers. Though I have undoubtedly grown and developed in both my writing and confidence since starting this position, one thing I knew for sure is that I would play the role of mentor. I take pride in my compassion, and I go above and beyond to facilitate every step of the process for each and every mentee. I was once in their position, too afraid to ask for assistance with anything, whether it creating an infographic or getting an interview. I step in and strive to uphold a judgement free zone. I want my peers to learn and grow as much as I once did.
I've always had trouble deciding on a "future dream career," as my interests are fairly varied; most notably indulging in pop-culture, politics and astronomy. My challenge was cracking down on a passion, but over time I recognized that I was a natural reader and thinker. My passion was just investigating my interests and exploring the world around me. I can research these subjects and write about them as a journalist. I intend to pursue my love of writing further with the knowledge I have gained from my time at North Pointe. I intend to attend at Michigan State to further my studies and career in journalism.
